The V750 certificate of entitlement proves that you have the right to place a private number, never before carried by a vehicle, onto a car. Buying from DVLA gives you one, and renewal costs nothing every 10 years as long as the number remains unused.

What a V750 certificate proves

Buying a private number does not include the plate itself. The right you buy covers applying to put the number on a vehicle registered to you, or to another person who acts as the nominee. That right is proven by the V750.

The grantee is the person named on the V750. They may appoint a nominee, replace the nominee later, and are the only ones able to request a replacement.

How you get a DVLA V750

  • Fixed price from DVLA: When you buy from DVLA at a fixed price, you receive a V750 after payment. Look at DVLA number plates.
  • DVLA auction: After your payment clears for a DVLA auction purchase, DVLA sends the V750 within 3 weeks. Read the guide on the DVLA number plate auction.
  • Dealer purchase: If you buy from a dealer, most will move the number to your car for you. To do either task yourself, ask whether the dealer can give you the V750 or V778.

V750 or V778?

Once you have them, both operate in the same way. A V750 applies when no vehicle has ever been issued the number. Removing a private number from a car gives you a V778 retention document, as in retain a number plate. Each lasts 10 years, and renewal works the same for both.

Steps for using a V750

  1. Make sure the car suits the number first. The number must not make the car appear newer than it really is, and Q registration is not allowed on the car.
  2. When the number is for another person's car, add that owner as the nominee on section 2 of the V750.
  3. To apply, go online to GOV.UK's keep or assign page, using the V750 and the log book for the car (V5C). There is no fee.
  4. When no inspection is needed for the car, the number is assigned immediately.
  5. Put on new plates before driving. A supplier registered for number plates accepts the V750 as proof that you may use the number.

If the car is brand new, give the dealer the V750 and ask them to apply. The assign a private plate page covers the full process.

V750 validity: how long it lasts and how to renew it

Your right to the number must be renewed every 10 years if it is not on a vehicle. Renewal costs nothing, and the new V750 is valid for another 10 years.

  1. Look on your V750 for the expiry date.
  2. Apply no earlier than 28 days before it expires.
  3. Renew online through the renew a private number certificate page on GOV.UK's website.

Your right to the number ends permanently if you fail to renew on or before the expiry date.

Lost V750 certificate

If you are the grantee, you can get a replacement as long as the V750 has not expired. Arrival takes around 3 to 4 weeks. Store the certificate safely. Never share any photo or scan of it, even if you are selling the number.
