Cheap private plates
Cheap private plates sit at the cheaper end of the market, and every price here is all-in: VAT, the plate, and the £80 DVLA assignment fee. Each seller gets that same plate listed, and the cheapest price appears first.
Cheap private plates, cheapest first, all-in
An all-in price includes VAT, the plate, and the £80 DVLA assignment fee. That ranking never moves: cheapest first. Buying through a link may earn us a fee (commission disclosure).

Why some private plates cost less
The cheapest private number plates tend to be current-style, like AB57 SAM, with the last three letters spelling a name or initials. Plates with a prefix from 1983 to 2001 usually come next. Dateless plates fall at the opposite end of the market, since they show no year and fit any car.
Length, how cleanly a plate reads, and how much the year shows all shape the price. When a random number sits in the middle of a plate, it costs less than a plate whose every character helps spell a word. Cheap cherished plates are harder to find, though an older suffix plate now and then appears in the grid.
Look at the year and the all-in price
Fees can hide behind a low headline price. We include VAT and the £80 DVLA fee in every price before sorting, because dealers sometimes leave out either one. Prices at DVLA Personalised Registrations already include them. There is an extra charge for the physical plates. DVLA does not provide them, so you pay a registered number plate supplier for them.
A car cannot look newer than it really is because of its plate. On a 2003 car, an 07 number is not allowed, and GOV.UK gives that example. Use our years table to compare the year identifier against your log book before anything else.

Common questions
Which private number plate is the cheapest?
Dealers reprice, so the answer shifts and we do not quote one price. Our price check right now lists the cheapest plates, all-in, in the grid above, and current-style plates that finish with a name tend to cost the least.
What is the best place to get a cheap private plate?
You will often see one plate priced differently by several dealers and by DVLA. Look it up on number plate search, compare what each seller includes, and buy from the one that is cheapest all-in.
Where can you get number plates made for the lowest price?
Our comparison covers registrations, not the physical plates. Only a registered number plate supplier can make plates for you, and they will ask for proof of your name, your address and your entitlement, such as a V750.
Are cheap private number plates any different from dear ones?
Whichever plate you pick, the rules and paperwork do not change. How clearly a plate reads and whether it carries a year set the price gap, and a year narrows the cars it fits.
