Suffix number plates
From 1963 to 1983, Suffix number plates were issued, each ending in one year letter, such as AAL 22A. At every seller, we compare the all-in price of the same suffix plate and list the cheapest first.
Cheapest suffix number plates, all-in
All-in covers the plate, VAT, plus the £80 DVLA assignment fee. This order stays cheapest first and never changes; buying through a link may earn us a fee (commission disclosure).

How the age shows on a suffix plate
Three letters come first in a suffix registration, then one to three numbers, and the year letter ends it. A was the first suffix letter, and each later letter points to a later year. Three letters come first on the plate, so suffix registrations for sale often have initials up front, like AAL or AAN.
Most cars on the road are newer, so suffix plates fit almost anything. They are a common choice if you are after a cherished look and do not want to pay dateless prices.
Checks to make before buying
No plate can make a car look newer than it really is. A suffix plate fits cars first registered in that letter year or later, but not older ones. Our years table for number plates lets you check the letter against the log book of a car from the 1960s.
To take a private number, a historic vehicle needs a current MOT, even where exemption would usually apply. The car must be taxed or have a SORN as well, and it must not be Q registered. For dateless options, see cherished number plates, or look at newer prefix number plates.
