Editorial policy
Buying, transferring or keeping a private plate is what our guides and price pages help with. Rules come from GOV.UK, and dealer facts come from each dealer's own pages.
Sources for our facts
We take rules and fees from GOV.UK first. Examples include the £80 DVLA assignment fee, the £80 charge for removing a private number from a vehicle, and the way V750 and V778 documents work. Guides that state a rule include a link to the GOV.UK page they took that rule from.
A dealer's own pages tell us what its listed price covers, what extra fees apply, and what else the dealer sells with the plate. A fact we cannot find on the dealer's own site is one we do not state.
Each seller's listing gives the price, and we calculate an all-in figure following how we check prices. Specific prices stay out of our guides, because they change.
How we write our pages
We use plain English, aimed at someone buying their first plate. Every page works to answer one question well, then sends you to related pages for anything else.
Legal, tax or finance advice is not something we give. If the choice rests on your own circumstances, for example a lease car or finance agreement, we tell you who to check with.
We publish no paid content
Sellers and other businesses cannot pay for any guide, mention, review or slot in our price lists. A fee may come our way from dealer links, as our commission disclosure explains, but it does not affect what we write.
Corrections
If a page has a mistake, something out of date or something unclear, tell us on our complaints and corrections page or email contact@privateplatecompare.co.uk. The source is checked, and if a page is wrong, we fix it. When we cannot confirm a fact on GOV.UK or on the dealer's own pages, we remove that fact.
Staying independent
We are neither a dealer nor DVLA. Read about privateplatecompare to see what the site does and what it does not do.
