Dateless number plates
Dateless number plates come without a year letter or an age identifier, so they suit a car of any age. At every seller we check the all-in price for the same dateless plate, and we list the cheapest first.
Cheapest dateless number plates, all-in
An all-in price covers the plate and VAT, plus the £80 DVLA assignment fee. That order stays cheapest first and never moves; buying through a link may earn us a fee (commission disclosure note).

How to spot a dateless plate
A dateless plate is simply letters and numbers, with nothing that marks the year of issue. Sample formats are 1 AB, 86 SAM, ABC 123 and 1000 D. A plate is dated, not dateless, when it shows a two-digit age identifier set in the middle, such as AB57 SAM, or one year letter at the front or back.
Northern Ireland plates carry no year either. You will find them on the Irish number plates page, and they tend to come in under the price of dateless plates from Great Britain.
Why dateless plates cost more
They hide a car's age, so dateless plates work on any car you own today or in years to come. Short plates read best, so 1-digit, 2-digit and 3-letter plates, along with number 1 plates, bring in the highest prices. Longer 3-digit and Number plates with a 4-digit format are the usual way in.
Things to check
The car must still qualify: it has to be a type needing an MOT, be taxed or hold a SORN, not be Q registered, and be used in the UK. The plate has to appear exactly as issued, using the standard spacing and font. Use number plate search to compare one seller's price with the rest, or our number plate valuation to see what similar plates sell for.
The questions people ask
How can I tell whether a plate is dateless?
Check for a year marker. A current plate shows a two-digit age identifier, while prefix and suffix plates show one year letter at the start or the end. A dateless plate shows neither.
Can a dateless plate fit any car?
Yes, they are. Without a year, it cannot make any car look newer. Your car must still qualify as a type needing an MOT, be taxed or hold a SORN, and not be Q registered.
Which 4-digit number plate is the cheapest?
Dealers reprice, so the figure changes. Our price check right now lists the cheapest ones in the 4-digit section above, all-in.
Are Irish number plates dateless?
Yes, they are. A plate from Northern Ireland carries no year identifier, so it can go on any car just as well, and it is often cheaper. Go to Irish number plates.
