How we check prices
Every seller listed here gets checked against the same plate, and each listed price becomes one all-in figure that covers VAT plus the £80 DVLA assignment fee. We then show sellers with the lowest price first.
Which sellers are in our comparison?
The sellers we compare right now are:
- DVLA Personalised Registrations (dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk)
- GetReg (getreg.co.uk)
- The National Numbers site is nationalnumbers.co.uk
- NewReg at newreg.co.uk
- Plates4Less at plates4less.co.uk
- Right Reg at rightreg.co.uk
- SwiftReg at swiftreg.co.uk
- Western Registrations at westernreg.co.uk
- Yellowhite at yellowhite.co.uk
- GoReg (goreg.co.uk)
A seller appears for a plate only if that seller lists the same registration. Only fixed prices count here: a lot sold at auction has no final price until that sale ends.
Turning a listed price into an all-in price
Because each seller displays its price differently, we note two things for every seller: whether the listed price covers VAT, and whether it covers the £80 DVLA assignment fee.
- We add 20% whenever a listed price leaves out VAT.
- We add £80 whenever the listed price does not include the £80 DVLA assignment fee.
- If both are already included, we display the price unchanged.
With DVLA Personalised Registrations and GetReg, VAT and the £80 fee are already part of the listed price. Every other seller above shows the plate price without VAT and without the fee, so we add both to it. If a seller shows its own total that includes VAT and the fee, we go with that total.
An all-in price covers the plate itself and your right to use it on your car. Extras such as physical plates and transfer services are optional and sold separately, so they stay outside our figure.
When less VAT applies
Some plates carry less than 20% VAT, either when a sale is for private sellers or when it is under a margin scheme. For those plates, the standard all-in figure can come out above the checkout total you see. Before you pay, always check the final total shown on the seller's page.
How we set the order
The order follows the all-in price, with the cheapest seller first. Price alone decides the order. Where a seller pays us a fee, its position comes from its price alone, and no payment can push it higher. Read our commission disclosure for the details.
When a plate is sold or goes out of stock
Plates do sell, and prices do change. If a seller stops listing a plate, we remove that seller from it at the next check. Report a price that is wrong. Report a plate that has gone. Use our complaints and corrections page for either, and we will check it.
